Used by invading Roman soldiers, the breed spread across Europe, finally settling near Berne, Switzerland where they took on more of a watchdog role, protecting herds of livestock and farmland. Brought to Texas by German immigrants, the hardworking, loyal breed took to the Texas prairies like a fish to water. Today, Bernese Mountain Dogs are known as the perfect family pet. Because of their beauty, you often see them in television commercials and advertisements. Their good natured, mellow temperament and iconic coloring make them ideal for breeding with Poodles. Being hypoallergenic with little to no shedding, make them great pets, both indoors and out.
